Who qualifies for NHS Orthodontic Treatment?
Young people under the age of 18 with a clear need for treatment may qualify for NHS treatment.
Melton Orthodontics, like the majority of orthodontic providers, does not offer adult orthodontics on the NHS.
The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) is the nationally applied rating system used to assess your eligibility for NHS treatment.
The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN)
The IOTN has five grades. Grades 4 and 5 are eligible for treatment coverage on the NHS. Grade 3 cases may be covered and are judged on an individual basis of the aesthetic appearance. As a guide this covers more commonly:-
- Grade 1: Almost perfect teeth
- Grade 2: Minor teeth irregularities, such as slight crookedness (any individual tooth up to 2mm out of line) or mildly protruding teeth (up to 6mm prominence)
- Grade 3: Greater teeth irregularities that do not usually need treatment for dental health reasons, such as mild crookedness (any individual tooth up to 4mm out of line)
- Grade 4: Severe teeth irregularities that need treatment for health reasons, such as such as moderately prominent teeth (up to 9mm), a few missing teeth, or any individual tooth over 4mm out of line
- Grade 5: Severe dental health problems, such as very prominent teeth (over 9mm), buried teeth or multiple missing teeth
