How do metal braces work?

Metal braces use custom brackets and wires, which are fixed to the front of your teeth for the duration of treatment. They exert gentle pressure, guiding your teeth into their optimum position to give you the straight smile you’ve always wanted. At Melton Orthodontics, we use two types of braces:

Mini Master Series braces are traditional metal brackets that combine intuitive design with trusted orthodontic technology. They have been used all around the world for many years and are a popular option with reliable and affordable results.

They are optimised to created the smallest brackets which still deliver optimum results, we have used this market leading system for over 20 years.

What does the treatment process involve?

Step 1

At your initial consultation, we’ll show you how metal braces can give you excellent and reliable results.

Step 2

The team will complete a comprehensive examination, collecting models, x-rays, photographs and scans to allow us to provide your bespoke treatment plan.

Step 3

We fit your braces onto your teeth. Regular adjustments are made at your progress appointments to ensure the best results.

Step 4

When treatment is complete, we reveal your new smile! A retainer helps you keep your teeth in their new position.

Frequently asked questions

How long will I need to wear metal braces?

The length of time you will need to have your metal braces on your teeth varies depending on the complexity of your case. On average, metal brace treatment takes around 18-24 months, but we will give you a more accurate estimate during your consultation.

Can I eat normally with braces?

It is best to avoid eating anything too hard, sticky or chewy during your treatment, as this could damage your braces or cause one of the brackets to become dislodged or broken. You should also avoid sugary foods, as these could compromise your oral health and cause staining. Softer foods, and food cut into smaller pieces, are best – you’ll soon be eating comfortably throughout treatment!

How do I clean my teeth with braces?

Keeping your teeth clean when you have braces fitted can be tricky, and requires care, but is really important to keep your oral health in good condition. Brush your teeth after every meal, using interdental brushes to reach between your brackets and around the wires.

What happens if a bracket breaks?

If one or more of your metal brackets breaks, don’t panic! Get in touch with us as soon as possible for advice – we’ll also arrange an appointment so we can get it fixed.
