Types of retainers at Melton Orthodontics

Vivera retainers

Vivera retainers from Invisalign are the gold standard, premier removable retainer. Not only is it the perfect follow-on from Invisalign treatment, it is suitable for any case, and is designed to prevent your teeth from shifting over time.

Vivera retainers are digitally designed using the latest manufacturing techniques to provide the most accurately fitting retainers.

This retainer is clear, maintaining your subtle treatment nature and boasts durability. strength and stain resistance, meaning you can count on the Vivera retainer to keep your smile straight for years to come.

You would receive two sets of Vivera retainers as standard, which may be an ideal option for a blended family, university students or just for those more likely to be forgetful and lose things!

Bonded retainers

Bonded retainers are thin wires, adapted to the contours of the front teeth. Attached permanently to the back of the teeth after treatment. They are not visible when you smile, though you will be able to feel them with your tongue.

Generally, a bonded retainer spans the back of 4-6 front teeth. Once you have become used to your permanent retainer, it is likely you’ll forget that it’s there. The benefit of a bonded retainer is that you can’t lose it, and there is very little upkeep, other than cleaning it in the same way you clean your teeth.

These are used in conjunction with a night-time removable Essix or Vivera retainer.

Essix retainers

Essix retainers are a more “traditional” form of clear removable retainer. They are designed to fit your specific teeth and bite, and are typically worn for a year or more after treatment. When the time comes, your Specialist Orthodontist can give you more information and help you decide which retainer suits you best.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wear my retainer for?

“Night-time for a life-time” is a very easy way of looking at retainers.

We recommend every night for a year, and then aiming to continue this for as long as is possible. As soon as you stop wearing your retainers your teeth will move away from the ideal position you have worked so hard to achieve.

What types of retainers are available?

The two main types of retainer are removable and fixed. At Melton Orthodontics, we offer Vivera and Essix removable retainers, which you can take out, and bonded retainers, which consist of a thin piece of wire permanently attached to the back of your teeth. Your orthodontist will recommend the best type for your individual needs.

Vivera retainers are not available on the NHS, although you may be able to upgrade to these.

Additional retainers are available at a charge if you would like to have spares. Please ask the team about what offers are available.

What if I lose or break my retainer?

If you lose or break your retainer, please contact us as soon as you can. We will arrange a fast repair or replacement to prevent your teeth from moving too much during the time without retention.

Can my teeth shift if I stop wearing my retainer?

Yes.

If you stop wearing your retainer, even after years of use, your teeth will gradually move back towards their original positions. Consistent retainer wear is very important to maintain your results and keep your straight smile.

We recommend “Night-time for a life-time”.
