We often use the adhesive (or Maryland) bridge design for our patients. The major advantage is minimal preparation of teeth, a little bit like cosmetic veneers. These tend to be more successful on front teeth but the technology is improving so posterior adhesive bridges are better retained. They can be made with metal or ceramic wings (brackets) glued to hold the false tooth securely in place.
Where the teeth are already heavily filled, we can use a conventional bridge. They are really just a series of crowns beautifully linked to false teeth. The neighbouring teeth, known as abutment teeth, need to be prepared and often require some enamel to be removed. The replacement tooth is attached to bridge the gap and complete your smile.
We first make sure that the teeth that will support the bridge are healthy and strong. They are then prepared by removing a layer of enamel.
We take impressions of the prepared teeth. These are sent to the dental laboratory. While your bridge is custom-made, we provide you with a temporary bridge to protect the exposed teeth.
When ready, we check your bridge, making sure it fits perfectly and making small adjustments if necessary. Your bridge is finally fixed in place with strong dental cement.
To care for your bridge, clean it thoroughly every day, paying special attention to the area under the false tooth. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to use special tools like interdental brushes to reach these areas effectively. Regular professional cleanings are also essential for maintaining your bridge and supporting teeth.
If bridges are well looked after, and that includes keeping the surrounding teeth healthy so they can continue to provide a solid foundation, they should last for over ten years.
Bridges restore your smile’s appearance and improve your ability to chew and speak properly. They also prevent adjacent teeth from shifting into the gap and help maintain your natural facial structure. Because they’re permanently fixed, they offer a convenient and stable solution that feels much like your own teeth.
It might take a few days to get used to your new bridge, especially when eating or speaking. However, most patients quickly adapt, and a well-fitted bridge should feel very natural and comfortable. They allow you to chew, speak, and smile with renewed confidence.
The main alternatives to bridges for replacing missing teeth are partial dentures and dental implants. Bridges are seen as a more secure alternative to partial dentures, as they are fixed into place and will not move or slip. Implants are seen as superior in durability and aesthetics but are more expensive. Bridges can be used in combination with implants to replace more than one missing tooth.
