How do dental veneers work?

If you’re unhappy with the look of one, a few, or a whole arch of your teeth, dental veneers can give you a radiant and flawless smile once more. They are typically made from natural-looking porcelain or ceramic material, and bonded to the front surface of your teeth to conceal imperfections and improve size and shape.

Veneers are a suitable treatment option for most patients, able to correct minor cosmetic issues or completely transform a smile. Their versatility and aesthetics makes veneers a durable and aesthetic solution you can trust.

What does the veneers treatment process involve?

Step 1

Tell us your cosmetic concerns and ideal results and we’ll show you how veneers can work for you!

Step 2

Using advanced equipment, we create a preview of your new smile and make sure you are happy with the plan.

Step 3

We remove a small amount of tooth enamel to prepare for your new veneers, which are custom-made for you.

Step 4

We fit your brand new veneers in place using strong dental adhesive - and watch you start smiling with confidence!

Frequently asked questions

Can veneers break?

While veneers are designed to be strong and resilient, it’s still important to treat them with care. To prevent damage, try to avoid habits like biting your fingernails, chewing on pen tops, or using your teeth to open things. It’s also probably best to steer clear of very hard or sticky foods that could potentially cause a veneer to chip or dislodge. With proper care, your veneers should last for many years.

How do I look after my veneers?

Looking after your veneers is straightforward and very similar to caring for your natural teeth. It is important to keep your veneer well-maintained with regular brushing and flossing. Your dentist and hygienist will show you how to keep on top of your dental hygiene. Regular check-ups will also allow us to keep a close eye on the long-term health of your veneers and natural teeth.

How long does the veneer process take?

One of the great advantages of veneers is how quickly you can achieve a new smile. Typically, the entire process, from your initial consultation to the final fitting of your veneers, can be completed in just two to three appointments over a couple of weeks. This makes them a fantastic option if you’re looking for a swift smile transformation.

Are veneers painful?

You shouldn’t find either the treatment for veneers or the veneers themselves painful. We use a local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort during the preparation and fitting process and ensure you are relaxed and ready before beginning any treatment. Most patients experience no pain or discomfort at all. You may feel some sensitivity once your veneers have been fitted, but this will go away after a few days.

Are veneers suitable for everyone?

Veneers are not universally suitable for every patient. A thorough assessment of your oral health by a dental professional is essential. Conditions such as significant tooth decay, gum disease, or insufficient enamel may preclude veneers as the most appropriate treatment option. Veneers are primarily a cosmetic solution, and maintaining excellent oral hygiene is crucial for their longevity.

What is the difference between composite veneers and porcelain veneers?

The main differences between composite veneers and porcelain veneers are the materials they are made of, how they are applied, durability and cost. Porcelain veneers are custom-made in a dental laboratory and bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They are very durable, but often cost more. Composite veneers are built up directly onto your teeth. They can often be completed in a single visit and are more cost-effective, but don’t last as long.
