Why is dental hygiene treatment important?

Your gums are the foundation of your healthy smile, so looking after them is crucial for your oral well-being. Dental hygienists are highly trained and qualified in caring for your gum health, regularly removing any build-ups of bacteria to prevent gum disease and other issues from developing.

The early signs of gum disease can be subtle and often go unnoticed, leading to more costly and involved treatment later on. A thorough check by a hygienist helps spot any symptoms, even those you haven’t noticed yet, and keeps your mouth healthy.

What does a hygienist appointment involve?

Step 1

To begin, we ask you about your oral hygiene routine at home, and if you have any concerns about your oral health.

Step 2

We examine your mouth, looking for any signs of decay or gum disease that need our attention.

Step 3

We thoroughly scale and polish your teeth, removing plaque deposits and making your smile look and feel smooth and bright.

Step 4

At the end of your visit, we give you some tailored advice for keeping your teeth and gums healthy at home.

Frequently asked questions

Is dental hygiene treatment painful?

You shouldn’t find dental hygiene treatment painful, but you may experience some temporary discomfort when your teeth are being cleaned. We are always guided by you, so please let us know if you are feeling nervous, or would like to stop for a break, so we can tailor our care to your needs.

How often should I see a dental hygienist?

The ideal frequency for your hygiene appointments depends on your individual oral health and the condition of your teeth and gums. Many patients find it useful to book a hygiene visit alongside their regular dental check-up, typically every six months. However, we will advise you when best to book this next appointment.

What’s included in a teeth cleaning appointment?

A typical hygiene appointment for teeth cleaning includes an informal chat about your oral health, scaling and polishing your teeth, and tailored advice. The main part of the appointment is the deep teeth cleaning, boosting your oral health.

What is interdental brushing, and why is it important?

Interdental brushing involves using small brushes to clean the areas between your teeth, where a regular toothbrush can’t reach effectively. It is important to use interdental brushes to remove any plaque or food debris from your teeth and prevent the development of decay or gum disease.

Can I see a hygienist without seeing the dentist first?

Yes, you can book a hygiene appointment separately from your regular dental check up. If you want an extra hygiene clean or are looking for advice, book your direct access appointment today.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease occurs when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up around your teeth and gum line, causing the gum tissues to become inflamed. You might notice your gums are irritated, swollen, or red, and they may bleed when you brush. These are often the first signs of the early stage, known as gingivitis. If left untreated, this gingivitis can progress to a more severe form of the condition, periodontitis. This isn’t reversible but is manageable with effective treatment.

What are the stages of gum disease?

The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, which can cause gums to separate from the teeth, creating pockets that can get infected. These pockets, over time, will deepen, the gums will continue to recede, and eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.
