How do lingual braces work?

Lingual braces work in the same way as traditional fixed braces, just from the back rather than front surface of your teeth. They are fitted on your teeth for the duration of treatment, so are always at work to move your teeth and can’t be lost or forgotten.

At Melton Orthodontics, we use WIN lingual braces, which are specially designed for three-dimensional tooth movement. They apply just the right amount of pressure to allow for efficient and calculated movements. WIN lingual braces are also ‘tongue-friendly’, meaning they have an extremely flat design to avoid discomfort and irritation during treatment.

What does the treatment process involve?

Step 1

We’ll explain the benefits of lingual brace treatment for you at your initial consultation.

Step 2

Your lingual braces are custom-made using precise digital scans to ensure well-fitting brackets and comfortable treatment.

Step 3

We carefully fix your brace to the back surface of your teeth. Adjustments are made at regular progress appointments.

Step 4

Once your treatment is complete, we remove your lingual brace and leave you to enjoy your new smile!

Frequently asked questions

Do lingual braces feel different from traditional braces?

As they are fitted on the inside surface of your teeth, lingual braces do feel different to traditional fixed braces. You will likely notice them more with your tongue, especially in the first few days after they have been fitted, but most people adjust quickly to this feeling.

How long does treatment with lingual braces usually take?

The duration of lingual brace treatment varies from person to person, depending on the complexity of the case and how far the teeth have to move. On average, treatment times can range from 12-24 months. We can give you a more exact estimate at your initial consultation.

Are lingual braces more difficult to clean?

Lingual braces can be more difficult to clean due to their position on the inside of your teeth. However, with practice it will become easier to maintain good oral hygiene during your treatment. Brush your teeth twice a day, using interdental brushes to reach behind braces.

Will lingual braces affect my speech?

You may notice changes in your speech, such as a lisp, as your tongue adapts to the presence of the braces in your mouth. This is usually temporary, and resolves itself in a few weeks as you get used to your lingual braces. Your speech will be clear and confident again before long.

Are lingual braces more expensive than other types?

Lingual braces tend to be more expensive than traditional fixed braces due to the customisation and skill needed in their creation and placement. They are available as a private orthodontic treatment. We are happy to discuss costs with you at your consultation.

Are lingual braces suitable for everyone?

Lingual braces are used and loved by teens, adults, and anyone else who wants to receive good quality treatment and excellent results without the look of traditional braces. They work the same way, just from a more subtle location, helping you to maintain confidence during treatment.
